Unit 03 Ideas and Concepts
Saul Bass Research
Searching up what kind of stuff Saul Bass created and what his style was like.
The Saul Bass style is nice and simplistic with simple shapes and colours that explain what the movie is going to be about it.
Saul Bass poster mood board that shows a bunch of different saul bass style movie posters.
Title sequence designed by Saul Bass, from the film "Ocean's Eleven' (1960)
This title sequence uses very simple images and shapes to make us understand that the film has something to to with a casino
Making custom Saul Bass style fonts by hand, using a pencil on A3 paper.
I used the movie titles: Godzilla and Castle In The Sky
At first i was going to use the godzilla movie title for my designs but adter some designing i decide to use the castle in the sky movie title because i thought it would look better and i do thonk it looks better.
I enjoyed doing this activity
My top 5 designs
For fun I made my own Saul Bass style movie posters at home.
I used the same fonts that a drew on paper out of my top 5 designs.
The posters were made on my computer using Paint Tool Sai software.
I had fun making these 2 movie posters.
Looking for Saul Bass type fonts made by other people on the internet.
I used the website dafont.com to find these fonts.
I found this exercise to be easy but boring.
I was told to compile a bunch of images that had something to do with the castle in the sky film.
I took images of castles, airships, the sky, atlantis (a lost city), steampunk like robots and treasure.
All these images have something to do with the film.
I was also told to make a mood board.
All these images basically represent all the import key features within the film.
10 Saul bass designs of stuff/events that happened within the castle in the sky film.
I experimented with different background and colours.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the background it makes the image look a lot more special then the other designs.
Mood board showing locations, art style and the kind of mood of the film (creepy and mysterious)
Mood board on the colours and texture that i might be using for my final poster
i took textures of tree's, bone, moss and wood, i took these textures because the film is about a haunted house that is next to a swamp so it would make sense to use textures of moss and old trees.
Mood board showing locations, art style and the kind of mood of the film.
the art style gives a sense of mystery to the film.
Mood board on the colours and texture that i might be using for my final poster
i took textures of ice and snow because the film happens in a cold and snowy enviroment.
Sketching out ideas and objects that could be added into the poster.
The thing poster ideas where I sketched a dog, a snow truck, an alien hand, an unknown person, a helicopter, and the block of ice with a question mark.
The Skeleton Key poster ideas where I sketched a voodoo doll, the skeleton key, a key hole, a candle, a dark magic invocation circle of some sort and the house from the film.
Here are 2 of my poster ideas for the skeleton movie.
The one on the left only contains my own representation of the skeleton key and the one on the right shows the house from the film with the moon in the sky and the skeleton key floating above the house to show the viewer that the film is probably about a haunted house of some sort.
The development of my saul bass style horror poster.
I made 3 different The Thing posters because i didn't really like the first 2 that i made.
Step 4 Final step: I changed the opacity of the alien to make it look like it creeping up on to the DNA slowly instead of a direct attack and i also added the names of 3 main actors at the bottom under the title to make the poster look more like a movie poster.
I am actually quite pleased with this design after being unhappy with the last 2 i think it looks good and it is definitely simple enough to be a Saul Bass style design.
If i had more time to further develop this design i would of added more actor names and the names of the writer and director and i would of also liked to add a slogan that say's: Terror has a new face ... and soon it will have yours (i saw this slogan on another The Thing movie poster and i thought that it would fit really well in my poster).
This is my final movie poster design for The skeleton key movie.
The design is supposed to represent the skeleton key from the movie, even thought in the movie the key doesn't actually look like this, it just looks like an ordinary key.
I decided to make the key look like this because it would really fit the title(a key with a small skull attached = skeleton key). The film is about a house that may or may not be haunted by the ghosts of some Voodoo witch doctors and the skeleton key in the film is used to open all the doors in the house. I tried to represent the story in the design by making the key look sinister, evil and haunted.
Step 1; at first i made the skull by observing other human skulls on Google images and then i gave it a bone texture (link to the texture HERE) after that i created the key piece and gave it an old metal texture(link to the texture HERE) and then i added the title at the bottom.
This design is definitely simple enough to be seen as a Saul Bass style poster
I think that this poster looks really professional but if i did have more time to develop it, i would of added the names of the directors and other cast members and i would of also added a slogan that said: It can open any door (i also saw this slogan on a different movie poster for this film).
I was also told to make a mood board.
All these images basically represent all the import key features within the film.
Making custom Saul Bass style fonts with Adobe Illustrator.
This was fun and quite easy to do.
My favourite custom title design out of the 5 designs
A spider diagram of stuff/events that could be drawn in the Saul Bass style
A few sketches of some of the stuff that I wrote in my spider diagram.
I later drew these sketches in more of a saul bass style with Adobe Illustrator.
I made 8 sheets showing objects or characters from the Castle In The Sky film.
All images were done in a saul bass style and all the characters and objects are shown in different ways.
squirrel-fox
In this representation i experimented with the colours and the way i could show the animal.
My favourite design would be the middle bottom one, i like it because it makes the background makes the animals fur camouflage.
Pazu a main character
In this representation of the character he is shown holding a gun.I experimented with different background and colours.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the background it makes the image look a lot more special then the other designs.
Laputa Robot
In this representation i experimented with shadows, colours and adding more detail.
My favourite design would be the bottom right because it looks cooler with the extra detail.
Sheeta a main character
In this representation i experimented with background and colours.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the background it makes the image look a lot more special then the other designs.
Laputa symbol
In this representation i experimented with colour, adding more detail and backgrounds.
My favourite design would be the top middle, i like it because it's in the form of the crystal from the film.
Train
In this representation i experimented with colour and shadows.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the added shadows it makes the image look like cardboard pieces on top of each other.
Pirate Airship
In this representation i experimented with colour, shadows and the clouds.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the change in colour, i prefer these colours because it make the airship look more like shiny new metal then old rusty metal.
The Castle in the sky
In this representation i experimented with colour, shapes and the clouds.
My favourite design would be the bottom right, i like it because of the clouds that are hiding the castle.
A rough storyboard of a Saul Bass movie trailer for the castle in the sky film.
Making the storyboard in Adobe Illustrator.
Making this storyboard was easy since i had already done most of the work before when i was making the objects/events designs.
For the writing i used the shark crash font.

Making a Saul Bass style horror movie poster in adobe illustrator
Horror poster research
Having a look at different types of horror movie posters and analysing them to figure out what kind of elements are needed to create a good horror movie poster.
A lot of these posters show that there is something to fear.
Saul Bass horror movie posters
Mood boards
Making some mood boards for the 2 horror movie posters I will be making.
Looking at the characters, objects, art style, places, elements, colours and textures that could be used to make the poster.
Horror movie number 1: The skeleton key
The skeleton key mood board poster showing characters and objects
Mood board showing locations, art style and the kind of mood of the film (creepy and mysterious)
Mood board on the colours and texture that i might be using for my final poster
i took textures of tree's, bone, moss and wood, i took these textures because the film is about a haunted house that is next to a swamp so it would make sense to use textures of moss and old trees.
Horror movie number 1: The thing
The thing mood board poster showing characters and objects
Mood board showing locations, art style and the kind of mood of the film.
the art style gives a sense of mystery to the film.
Mood board on the colours and texture that i might be using for my final poster
i took textures of ice and snow because the film happens in a cold and snowy enviroment.
Horror fonts found on the DAfont website.
My preferred fonts tweaked to make them look better with the movie title.
My final movie titles which i might be using for my final movie poster design.
The one on the left only contains my own representation of the skeleton key and the one on the right shows the house from the film with the moon in the sky and the skeleton key floating above the house to show the viewer that the film is probably about a haunted house of some sort.
This is my poster idea for The thing movie.
It shows a mysterious figure of a man and the snow base in the background.
The man has a question mark on his face to show the viewer that we don't quite know what or who this is (is it a man or maybe something else ?).
The development of my saul bass style horror poster.
I made 3 different The Thing posters because i didn't really like the first 2 that i made.
This poster is based off of the sketch i made, but i really wasn't happy with the way it looked i wanted something a bit more simple and easy to understand.
This poster was more just of a test then an actual poster idea, what i didn't like about it, is that i was using a drawing that wasn't drawn by me and that it wasn't really simple enough to be in the Saul Bass style, other then that i think it could really look good if i had developed it more.
Here is my final poster idea: an alien cell attacking human DNA to copy it.
In the film the thing (the alien) eats people and then copy's their DNA to look like that person and hide amongst the other humans, and that's how i came up with the idea.
Step 1: I first started by drawing the double helix DNA structure and then i drew the alien cell, i made it look menacing by giving it teeth and an evil eye, i then outlined the alien cell to make it stand out.
Step 2: I found a dark texture to put in the background to make the poster look more sinister (link to the texture HERE) after that i gave the alien cell some tentacles to really show the viewer that the alien is going after the DNA.
Step 3: I repositioned the alien and the DNA structure so i could fit in the title at the bottom.
even do there is no snow or ice in the poster i decided to keep the title the way it is (icy and cold) to show the viewer that the film has something to do with a cold and icy environment.

Step 2 final step: I added a dark texture background to make the poster look more sinister and evil (link to the texture HERE) after that i added the names of 4 actors from the film, the company logo and writing say that it was from the same writers as the ring.
I only needed to design 1 poster because i knew straight away what design i was going to go with and how i was going to develop it, and i was also really confident that it would look good.

Adobe illustrator tutorial
Creating a pear with an arrow through it.
This was a really easy tutorial to follow and do i didn't get stuck while creating it.
But it did help me learn more on how to use the pen tool which is useful.
